Job description

An electronic equipment trades worker maintains, repairs and adjusts electronic equipment for commercial and
office machines such as fax machines, computers, cash registers and photocopiers. They may also repair video

An electronic equipment trades worker works in a range of industries including manufacturing, retail, and
wholesale industries. They may also work as self-employed contractors.
Electronic equipment trades workers must be aware of workplace health and safety (WHS) regulations,
especially in the electrical/electronics area. They often wear and use supplied protective equipment in the
workplace.

Electronics and communications technicians diagnose faults and repair
electronic devices, including audiovisual, broadcast, business and medical
equipment.

Electronics and communications technicians may work in workshops, private
homes or manufacturers’ factories. They may have a considerable amount of
contact with the public. They may also work in confined spaces, have to stand
for long periods and be required to work at heights on masts, towers and
roofs.

What’s it like to be an Electronic Equipment Technician?

Electronic equipment technicians install, service and repair electronic
equipment for industrial, commercial and domestic purposes. They work with
equipment such as computer networks, mobile phones, radio communications
equipment (such as WLAN, two-way radio transceivers, CB radio, and radio and
TV broadcast studio equipment), video arcade machines, microphones and public
address systems.

They may work in workshops, in private homes or in manufacturers’ factories.
They may be required to work in confined spaces and have to sit or stand for
long periods. They may also need to work at heights on masts, towers and
roofs. Some may have considerable contact with the public. An awareness of
safety regulations is important. Electronic equipment technicians are often
