INTERNSHIP IN ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM

The Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) is a profession-wide, comprehensive program administered by the Canadian Architectural Licencing Associations (CALA). The Program contributes to the development of architects who can provide high quality architectural services. A comprehensive internship program is necessary to acquire and reinforce the knowledge, integrity, judgment, skills, discipline and quest for learning that must serve the architect for a lifetime.

An Intern Architect is an individual whose education has been certified by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB), and who has been accepted into the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) by an Architectural Licensing Authority in Canada.

Intern Architects work towards completing the post-graduate requirements (continuing education, experience and examination) of the Internship in Architecture Program in order to become a registered architect in their province/territories.

For enrolment as an Intern Architect, application must be made to the provincial/territories association of architects, and the following information must be provided:

  • CACB certificate (or recognized equivalent)
  • names of Employer (if employed) and Mentor and confirmation from each on the application form
  • payment of fees (which are established annually by the provincial/territories association).

Key Individuals Who Share This Responsibility

  • The Employer is the individual within the firm or organization who personally supervises and directs the Intern on a daily basis. The Employer regularly assesses the quality of work performed and certifies the Intern’s documentation of work experience activity.
  • The Mentor is an architect selected by the Intern or Student. The Mentor should not be employed by the same firm as the Intern or Student. The Mentor meets with the Intern/Student for regular reviews of experience progress, discussion of career objectives and broader issues related to the profession and the registration/licensing process.

Knowledge and Currency of Experience in the Northwest Territories

The NWTAA requires the Intern Architects to demonstrate knowledge of local conditions of practice and currency of experience in the Northwest Territories as a requirement for licensing. The Intern Architect must complete at least 940 hours of experience in the Northwest Territories under the personal supervision and direction of a person licensed to engage in the practice of architecture in the Northwest Territories. This experience must be completed under the categories A, B or C of the Canadian Experience Record Book within the three years prior to the date on which Application for Registration is made.

Application Requirements

Reporting Requirements

Interns are required to attain 3720 hours of work experience to complete their internship. Experience is reviewed and evaluated at the end of each 900-1000 hours of architectural experience or at the change of employement. Interns (and their mentors) must complete, review and submit their hours via the Canadian Experience Record Book (CERB).

The following must be submitted at each reporting period:

Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC)

Reciprocity

RECIPROCITY WITHIN CANADA

With the exception of Yukon and Nunavut*, all architects working within any Canadian jurisdiction must be registered with the regulator of that jurisdiction.
The NWTAA is a signatory of the Reciprocity Agreement of the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities (CALA), which uniformly recognizes credentials for architectural registration across Canada, and allows for licensing between the territorial/provincial regulators with a minimum of barriers. The agreement is applicable to all architects in good standing in their originating or primary (“home”) jurisdiction.
While this agreement facilitates an expedient registration, regulators may still require conditions to be met or reject applications where the public interest is at risk.
The reciprocity agreement aligns with the provisions of the federal/provincial/territorial Agreement on Internal Trade.
[*Yukon & Nunavut are not currently represented by a regulatory body. However, persons offering or providing architectural services in these territories must be registered and in good standing in any Canadian jurisdiction.]

MRA WITH UNITED STATES

As of June 2015, 41 jurisdictions of the United States are signatories to a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with Canada, which came into effect on January 1, 2014. The agreement allows for fast-track cross-border registrations of architects between the two countries:

EXAMINATION FOR ARCHITECTS IN CANADA

The Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC) was developed to test the minimum standards of competency acquired by an Intern during the Internship period, to ensure both public safety and the professional and skilled delivery of architectural services.
The ExAC is administered once each year, simultaneously across Canada, in each province/territory listed on the ExAC Registration Form. The ExAC may be offered in multiple locations in some provinces, subject to each Licensing Authority’s specific requirements.

Interns must have 2800 hours of experience recorded in the Canadian Experience Record Book (CERB) and submitted for approval to one of the provincial/territorial associations in Canada. The Intern must register for the ExAC in the jurisdiction in which he/she is an Intern but may write the ExAC in any location in Canada where a Licensing Authority offers the examination.

The ExAC is a paper and pencil examination and is delivered in four half-day sessions over a period of two consecutive days. Interns are given three consecutive attempts to achieve to pass all four sections of the ExAC. The dates and costs for the sections are set out on the ExAC website.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

The Mandatory Continuing Education program was developed in response to the profession’s recognition of its own needs, as well as the public’s growing need for assurance that licensed professionals, with exclusive statutory rights to practice, remain current with contemporary technology, business practices, methods and materials of their profession. Each member accepts the obligation and the need to further their education as an architect in order to maintain active registration status.

The Mandatory Continuing Education Professional Development Requirements, including periodic updates, describe the protocols for the earning, recording and administration of ongoing education required by every registered architect in the NWT. The requirement for all members of the NWTAA to participate in and comply with the Continuing Education Learning was adopted as NWTAA General By-Laws Part 17. The Continuing Education Learning is approved by Council and is developed by the NWTAA Continuing Education Committee. It is implemented and operated by NWTAA management and staff.

For more information, see Practice Bulletin #3 - Mandatory Continuing Education Requirements

DESIGNATED REPORTING JURISDICTIONS

NWTAA will grant equivalency to members who have designated another Canadian jurisdiction for primary reporting of Continuing Education, regardless of the requirements of that jurisdiction. At the end of each reporting period, NWTAA will contact the relevant jurisdiction directly for verification of the member’s compliance with the requirements of that jurisdiction.
Non-compliance in another jurisdiction will automatically transfer as non-compliance with the NWTAA, and consequences for non-compliance will apply.

REPORTING CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS

Members designating the NWTAA as their primary reporting jurisdiction must record their Structured Learning and Unstructured Learning Hours on the Architecture Canada (RAIC) Transcript Database. For assistance with username and password issues, contact the NWTAA office.

COURSES/WORKSHOPS DESCRIPTION

From time to time, NWTAA organizes and delivers continuing education activities that are centrally located in Yellowknife, NT.
Members are encouraged to bring forward ideas for the professional development of the program.
