The NDAEB was established on November 15, 1997 at which time, the responsibility for the administration of the national examination of Dental Assistants in Canada was transferred from the Canadian Dental Assistants’ Association (CDAA).

The NDAEB is an independent Board endorsed by many dental assisting associations and regulatory bodies. The Board has nation wide representatives from the Dental Assisting Regulatory Authorities, the Canadian Dental Assistants’ Association, the Canadian Dental Association, the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada, dental assisting educators from accredited and non-accredited educational institutes, and the public.

The National Dental Assisting Examining Board conducted a thorough review of the Domain Description in 2010. The revised Domain Description becomes effective on January 1, 2011. Stakeholders including all schools, Dental Assisting Regulatory Authorities, dental assisting associations and the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada have been advised. The next review of the Domain Description will be conducted in 2015.

The Domain Description for Dental Assisting is the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours the dental assistant should possess upon entry/re-entry into practice and is utilized for:

Preparation of examination candidates

Dental assisting education

Examination development and review

When preparing for the NDAEB exam, candidates are advised to refer often to the Domain Description for Dental Assisting which is found in the Candidate Handbook.

The Domain Description is reviewed periodically to ensure its content reflects current entry level practice for dental assisting in Canada.

For reasons of public protection, the NDAEB will release all written exam and Clinical Practice Evaluation, including pass or fail results, to the DARA in the province in which the exam was written or the CPE was taken. Results will also be released to any other DARA requesting the information or to any DARA the NDAEB believes should receive the information.

Applicants must sign the agreement contained on the written exam or CPE application form, acknowledging the release of exam and CPE results before being registered with the NDAEB. For details, please refer to the NDAEB privacy policy on this site.

have successfully completed a formal education program, recognized by the NDAEB, that includes the fundamental knowledge required to perform patient care as a chairside dental assistant (Level 1), plus formal education in:

provides oral hygiene instruction

provides dietary counseling relative to oral health

exposes dental radiographs

obtains preliminary impressions for study casts

applies and removes dental dam

performs selective coronal polishing (rubber cup)

applies treatment liner (no pulpal involvement)

applies and removes matrix band and wedge

performs tooth whitening using trays

To apply for the NDAEB exam, complete the online application form and mail or courier to the NDAEB office in Ottawa to arrive by 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time on the deadline date.

Please include proof of education (Level I and II), passport size photo and the exam fee.

Applications received after the deadline will not be processed and will be returned to sender.

Applicants must have completed a formal dental assisting education program recognized by the NDAEB. Applicants who have completed a formal program of study NOT accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada will be required to have their credentials assessed.

Applicants may be required to have an assessment of their education completed by a qualified independent assessment agency.

Requests for accommodation of special needs will require documentation at time of application. Documentation will include a special accommodations request form submitted by the candidate and a psychological report or a letter from a physician, confirming the nature of the condition and the recommended accommodation. Psychological reports must have been completed within the previous five years. Requests for alternate writing dates for religious reasons will require a letter from a religious leader.

Complete the Examination Application Form before printing.

Ensure you enclose proof of dental assisting education (ie. A copy of your diploma or certificate), the fee, (bank draft or money order), and photo to be affixed on page 2 of the application form.
Forward all the information by mail or courier to arrive at the NDAEB business office no later than 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time on the application deadline date. We do not accept faxed applications. See deadline dates on the following page.
Once the NDAEB receives and approves your examination application, a letter will be sent to you confirming your eligibility.
A letter of Admission will be sent approximately 2-3 weeks prior to the examination date. This letter will include the date, time, site and any other information pertinent to the writing of the examination.
Please advise the NDAEB of address changes.

The examination is composed of 200 multiple choice questions.Many of the questions are case-based. Examples are provided in the Candidate Handbook on our website.

笔试有考试次数限制 Limit on the Number of Attempts on the Written Exam

经过3次考试，但仍旧没有合格的申请人必须再次完成加拿大牙科认证委员会认可的牙科助理项目后，才能再次参加NDAEB考试。

Candidates who are unsuccessful after 3 attempts will be required to retake their entire dental assisting education at a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada should they wish to rewrite the NDAEB exam.

Examinations are scored by the Division of Studies in Medical Education, University of Alberta.

Results will be mailed within six (6) weeks following the examination date.

Examination results will only be discussed with the candidate in general terms. Candidates requiring details or wishing to appeal must do so in writing. (See exam Re-scoring and Appeals section in the candidate handbook).

The NDAEB will inform the provincial DARA of the candidate’s examination and/or CPE results in the province in which the candidate wrote the exam; provided that in the case of a pass result, the NDAEB must first be in receipt of proof of the candidate’s completion of the education before providing the results to any DARA.

The NDAEB developed a Clinical Practice Evaluation (CPE) for use by Dental Assisting Regulatory Authorities (DARA) in the licensing/registration of dental assistants. See the CPE Handbook on this site for general information.

Photographs of instrument and supply tray setups are available on this site. Please note: the photos represent generic setups. All evaluation sites may not provide exact instrument and supply items as shown in the photos. Some items may be substituted for similar instruments or materials.

Some DARA require graduates of Canadian non-accredited and out-of-country educational programs to successfully complete a two-part NDAEB certificate to include the written examination followed by the CPE. To confirm the requirement for the CPE in your province, please refer to the Registration & Licensure section of this website for DARA contact information.

The NDAEB administers the Clinical Practice Evaluation at sites across Canada four times annually. For CPE sessions and application deadline dates, please see the calendar on this site. The fee for the full CPE session (9 skills) is $1200.00 (CAN only) made payable to the NDAEB. This includes a non-refundable $100.00 (CAN only) application fee [$1100 + $100]. The fee for re-taking individual skills is $200.00 (CAN only) per skill plus a non-refundable $50.00 (CAN only) application fee. Candidates registering for 6 or more skills are required to pay the full fee of $1200.00 (CAN).

The Clinical Practice Evaluation includes the following nine (9) skills:

费用表 Schedule of Fees - 飞出国

在2014年6月13日年度大会上，NDAEB决定增加临床执业评估费，并于2015年1月1日开始实施。

At the June 13, 2014 Annual General Meeting, the Board approved an increase to the fees charged for the Clinical Practice Evaluation. The fees below will become effective on January 1, 2015.

Candidates who withdraw from a scheduled Clinical Practice Evaluation (CPE) session without valid reasons will be assessed a withdrawal fee as stated in the table below.

Appeal fee $150.00 Appeal fee is refundable if the appeal is granted.

如何申请CPE How to Apply for the CPE - 飞出国

NDAEB does not accept applications by fax machine or email.

Notes:

Applicants may apply for the CPE before they receive their written exam results in order to meet CPE deadlines. Applicants who are unsuccessful on the written exam will have their application withdrawn by the NDAEB and their fees reimbursed (except for the nonrefundable application fee).

Candidates must apply for all skills required to complete the CPE. Candidates may not apply for partial CPE unless applying for reevaluation of individual skills or if proof of partial education in lieu of CPE is submitted with the application.

Qualified persons educated outside Canada may apply to write the NDAEB examination. Applicants must be prepared to provide proof of education which is substantially equivalent to the NDAEB standard.

To be eligible to write the NDAEB examination, applicants must be qualified as intra-oral (Level II) dental assistants, through formal dental assisting education or other formal allied dental healthcare educational programs such as dentistry or dental hygiene. At minimum candidates must show proof of formal education in the following mandatory skills:

Chairside dental assisting (Level I)

Exposes dental radiographs

Provides oral hygiene instruction

Provides dietary counselling relative to oral health

Applies and removes dental dam

Performs selective rubber cup polishing

Applies anti-cariogenic agents

Obtains preliminary impressions

Applies and removes matrices and wedges

Applies treatment liners (no pulpal involvement)

Applies pit and fissure sealant

Applies desensitizing agents

Applies topical anaesthetic

Performs tooth whitening using trays

The NDAEB written exam constitutes Part I of the mandatory two-part NDAEB certificate for international applicants. Part II requires the successful completion of the NDAEB Clinical Practice Evaluation (CPE). (For details on the CPE, please see the CPE Candidate Handbook elsewhere on this site).

International applicants may choose to attend intra-oral (Level II) upgrading at a Canadian dental assisting program rather than challenge the CPE. Upgrade programs must include the following intra-oral skills:

Obtains preliminary impressions

Applies treatment liners (no pulpal involvement)

Applicants choosing to attend academic upgrading in lieu of the CPE are advised to attend a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada. Please refer to the list of schools on this website.

Applicants should be aware that while the NDAEB recognizes upgrading completed at schools listed on its website, some Dental Assisting Regulatory Authorities may require non-accredited program graduates to complete the Clinical Practice Evaluation prior to considering them for licensure or registration.

Note:
The NDAEB requires applicants to be educated to perform the mandatory skills as the operator as opposed to assisting a dentist with the procedure.

Note:

The requirement for the NDAEB certificate is determined by the provincial Dental Assisting Regulatory Authorities, therefore; you are advised to confirm the requirement for the NDAEB certificate in the province you intend to work in before applying to the NDAEB.

Applicants who have completed formal dental assisting or related training programs outside Canada must have their theoretical and clinical education assessed by the NDAEB to determine eligibility to complete the national examination process. To be considered for exam eligibility, international applicants must submit their academic records to one of three agencies specializing in the authentication and comparison of foreign academic credentials to the Canadian education system.

Assessment reports will be provided to the applicant and the NDAEB office directly by the agency. The NDAEB has no control over the time required by the agencies to conduct the assessment; therefore, applicants should plan accordingly. In the event the agency is unable to complete the assessment for any reason, the NDAEB is unable to consider granting exam eligibility based on foreign credentials.

Note:
Foreign trained applicants, who have applied to the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) and who have been granted exam eligibility may submit proof of eligibility or status verification report issued by the NDEB in lieu of the credentials assessment report by one of the three agencies listed earlier.

In addition to a report from one of the three agencies listed above, candidates must submit the following documents to the NDAEB:

$150.00 credentials assessment fee, payable in Canadian dollars to NDAEB by money order or bank draft only. NDAEB does not accept credit or debit cards, personal cheques or cash.

Certified true copies of academic transcripts and diploma, translated to English or French if necessary, plus a certified true copy of the original document in another language if it was translated. Copies of academic records and other required documents must be certified or notarized as true copies in Canada by a notary public, lawyer or commissioner of oaths. True copies of documents certified at a Service Canada or similar provincial government office are also acceptable. Documents notarized in another country are not acceptable except those that were certified /notarized by Canadian staff at a Canadian embassy or consulate abroad.

A signed consent form permitting the NDAEB to gather and disclose your personal information to members of the Candidate Eligibility Assessment Committee (Available as a PDF document on this web site)

If the name appearing on the academic records or other documents is different than the name of the applicant, a certified true copy of a marriage or divorce certificate or sworn affidavit is required for NDAEB to verify and reconcile the name of the applicant with the name appearing on the documents being submitted.

If you wish to submit the required documents to the NDAEB before the credentials assessment is completed by the selected agency, advise the NDAEB office in writing as to the date your application was sent to the agency. Submitted documents will be held by the NDAEB until such time as the credentials evaluation report is received.

Note: NDEB Status Verification Report in lieu of Credential Assessment report

Applicants applying in this manner must also submit to the NDAEB the documents listed above.

Upon receipt of all required documents, the NDAEB will then consider your eligibility to write the national exam. If, in the opinion of the NDAEB, your education in dental assisting or allied dental profession is considered substantially equivalent to the Canadian standard, exam eligibility may then be granted.

If, in the NDAEB’s opinion, your academic education is not considered to be substantially equivalent to the standard for dental assisting in Canada, you will be directed to a Canadian dental assisting education program for the required upgrading should you wish to attain the NDAEB certificate.

After attaining a passing score on the NDAEB written exam, you will be required to successfully complete the NDAEB Clinical Practice Evaluation (CPE) before the NDAEB certificate is issued. 教育提升 Educational Upgrading

In the event your dental assisting education does not meet the standard required for exam eligibility, you may wish to attend an educational upgrading program in Canada. International applicants considered eligible for the NDAEB examination may wish to attend upgrading in the clinical component (9 intra-oral skills) rather than sit the Clinical Practice Evaluation (CPE). Applicants successfully completing intra-oral upgrading at a Canadian school will not be required to complete the CPE by the NDAEB but will be considered graduates of a Canadian program.
