Secondary education (secondaire) starts at 12 years of age. There are 5 grades, called secondary 1-5 (sec 1-5 for short). If the student has repeated 2 years, he can have an exceptional year (18 years of age on September 30th, the excess of age limit) in order to finish secondary 5. But, if the student has repeated more than 2 years, he can’t have an exceptional year (18 years of age on September 30th, the excess of age limit) in order to finish secondary 5. Upon completion of secondary 5, students receive their high school diploma from the provincial government.
