Engineering and geoscience are regulated professions in Canada. This means that if you are working as an engineer or as a geoscientist in Canada, you must either:

  • Be registered as a Professional Engineer or Geoscientist in the province or territory in which you are working; or
  • Work under the direct supervision of someone who is registered as a Professional Engineer or Geoscientist in the province or territory in which you are working.

It is the responsibility of each province and territory to register the professionals offering services in their jurisdiction. In British Columbia, this is done by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia. Provincial and territorial associations are linked through Engineers Canada and the Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists. The association strives to set and maintain high academic, experience and professional practice standards. These standards work to protect public health, safety and welfare.

As a member of APEGBC, you will represent the highest standards of academic knowledge, work experience, and professionalism in Canada.

As a Professional Engineer, Professional Geoscientist, Non-Resident Licensee or Limited Licensee, you gain a professional certificate and stamp. The stamp allows you to sign and seal documentation that you believe upholds the paramount safety of society and the well-being of the environment.

All members are also given a special professional designation to use after their name, for example: P.Eng., P.Geo., EIT or GIT. These designations are recognized in Canada, the United States and many other international countries.

  1. All new applicants for Professional Engineer registration or licence whose application was received on or after June 1st, 2015.
  1. Individuals who have applied for Professional Engineer registration or licence prior to June 1, 2015 but, as of June 1, 2015, had two or fewer years of experience following graduation

Exceptions:

Separate processes for experience reporting are in place for certain applicant groups. You will not be required to use the Competency Experience Reporting System if you are:

  1. An applicant for P.Eng. licensure who, prior to June 1, 2015, had submitted a P.Eng. application and had two or more years of work experience. These applicants have the option of reporting work experience through the competency system or the traditional reporting method (please see below).
  1. Currently registered or licensed as a professional engineer with another jurisdiction in Canada;
  2. A U.S. Professional Engineer who holds a current state board license and can provide a current NCEES Record to APEGBC; or

Traditional Reporting Method (Not applicable to P.Eng. applicants after June 1, 2015)

This is a detailed description of your engineering work experience. It should be in first-person, in electronic format (PDF) and organized for clarity of reading. Your experience must be presented in chronological order and provide the following information for each position/employer:

  • dates of engagement, name of the employer, your position and the name and position of your professional supervisor;
  • a first-person description of the work for which you were responsible, including a description of the projects in which you were involved and your role in each project;
  • clearly identify the engineering problems you encountered and how you solved them;
  • methods, resources, standards and codes upon which you relied to carry out the work;
  • supervision you provided (if any);
  • other details as applicable that clearly demonstrate to APEGBC’s reviewers the nature and level of your engineering or experience and your competence.

Any gaps or overlaps in time periods should be explained. APEGBC will be looking for evidence of a progression of experience and responsibility throughout your career.

As a guideline, a typical experience report will not be less than ten pages and no more than twenty pages, single-spaced. Note that publications and/or training do not count as part of the Work Experience Details Report and should be listed at the end.

An Engineering Work Experience Template is available for use. When using the template, please ensure that you provide multiple projects from each period of employment that when combined, will demonstrate that you have the the adequate depth and breadth of knowledge required as per the Satisfactory Engineering Experience Guidelines.

Applicants who are licensed in the United States as professional engineers and hold a current NCEES Record may submit this in lieu of work details, references, transcripts and US State Board confirmations.

After Applying

It takes approximately 2-4 months to review your application once we have received all of the required documents. For information about checking the status of your application please see Application Status.

First, an academic review will be done to determine if you meet APEGBC’s minimum academic requirements for professional engineer status. If these requirements are not met, academic examinations may be assigned. Next, your experience will be reviewed to determine whether it meets minimum requirements. An interview may be required as part of the experience review process.

If you earned your engineering degree outside of Canada and have more than seven years of engineering experience, you may be granted an interview in order to determine if all or some of the academic exams normally assigned to someone with your degree background can be waived on the basis of your experience. There is no guarantee that an interview will result in the waiving of academic examinations.

All applicants for professional membership are required to sit and pass a Professional Practice Examination and attend a Law and Ethics Seminar (or purchase and view the Law and Ethics Seminar CDs) and to fulfill the English Language Competency and Good Character requirements.

Once registered or licensed, you will be sent a notification e-mail along with a welcome package, stamp and your certificate of registration/licensure.

FLYabroad

What do I need to study?

You need to study the topics as listed for an examination, as outlined in the Engineering or Geoscience syllabus. Note that the examination will be based on these topics only.

You may use any textbooks you wish; however, you may want to refer to your specific syllabus for a list of recommended textbooks. Note that for those applying to write geoscience examinations that you will be contacted regarding the recommended study material. These textbooks are not available at APEGBC.

Academic examinations assigned on a confirmatory basis may not be replaced by completion of a course; however academic examinations assigned due to missing topic coverage in a candidate’s academic background may be completed by taking courses acceptable for credit at a university faculty of applied science or science (note: syllabus topics may not be able to be covered by a one-semester course). Candidates who wish to submit courses for consideration for coverage of a syllabus topic must provide a detailed course outline with a completed self-assessment form (for this form, see the discipline-specific syllabus).

If you have been assigned examinations after a detailed assessment of your non-engineering degree against the syllabus of required topics in your discipline of engineering, please note that some of your experience prior to completing the assigned topics may not be credited towards the required four years of satisfactory experience until all assessed deficiencies have been cleared either by successfully completing the examinations, or by passing approved equivalent courses. Credit is typically given for up to one year of experience gained prior to completion of academic requirements if it meets APEGBC’s Competency Framework or Satisfactory Experience Guidelines and is supervised by an appropriate professional. This is examined on a case-by-case basis.

How Do I Apply to Write an Examination?

Please refer to the Academic Examination Regulations for important information about the examinations.

If you have already been assigned academic examinations and wish to apply, please download the Academic Exam Application package.

Note that you do not need to take all of the assigned examinations at one time. However, you must make sure that you finish your academic examinations before your examination deadline, as specified in your exam assignment letter.

How Much Does it Cost?

Per examination $338.55
Defer examination to a subsequent session $194.25
Examination re-read per examination $257.85

Can I Claim the Exam Fees on My Income Taxes?

For 2011 and subsequent years, the federal budget proposes to allow a tax credit for examination fees paid to an institution for examinations taken in the year if the examination is required to obtain a professional status recognized by federal or provincial statute. For more information, please consult the federal government website.
