English Language Requirements

We want our students to be able to fully participate in all NBCC educational activities. Therefore, you must be able to demonstrate adequate competence in English.

If you do not meet the English language requirements for admission to NBCC programs, you can apply directly to the University of New Brunswick Saint John College for admission into their English for Academic Purposes program.

Full participation in learning activities depends upon adequate proficiency in the language of instruction. In the case of non-Canadian transcripts, NBCC will require translation into either of the two official languages. Adequate competency in the English language is required for international and permanent resident (landed immigrants) applicants.

NBCC may request the submission of a valid test score on a recognized linguistic test if:

  • the applicant’s first language is not English; or,
  • a minimum of three (3) years of secondary education has not been in English; or,
  • a minimum of one (1) year successful completion in a recognized post-secondary institution has not been in English.

If your first language is not English, NBCC will require proof of English language competency and will accept any one of the following:

New Brunswick GED

  • Successful completion of both the Language Arts, Writing and the Language Arts, Reading components of the GED
  • Note: This applies to most programs, unless we require a higher/specific test score for language proficiency (Example: Pharmacy Technician). Please visit the program pages accordingly.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

  • Internet based test: minimum score of 80 with no subject test less than 20
