Occupational Overview

Bakers prepare bread, rolls, muffins, pies, pastries, cakes and cookies in retail and wholesale bakeries and food service establishments. Bakers who are supervisors are included in this unit group. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Main Duties

  • Prepare dough for breads, buns, croissants, pastries, cakes and other baked goods according to standard recipes or special customer orders
  • Operate baking ovens to bake various types of breads, pastries and other baked goods
  • Decorate and frost cakes, cupcakes and other baked goods
  • Ensure quality and freshness of products meet established standards
  • Plan and schedule production to determine type and quantity of goods to be produced
  • Order baking supplies and ingredients
  • May supervise sales and merchandising of baked goods
  • May hire, train and supervise baking staff and kitchen personnel.

Employment Requirements

  • Completion of secondary school is usually required.
