The College provides Assessments for Registration to internationally educated dietitians.
Applicants in this category must have their education, practical training and work experience assessed for “substantial equivalence” to current Canadian dietetic education and practical training, in accordance with section 44(2)(b) of the CDBC bylaws.

The CSAP was originally developed by the CDBC Registration Committee and a consultant through the Essential Competencies Registration Project, a project funded by the BC Government from 2007 to 2009. On April 18, 2011, the Registration Committee approved the CSAP as its new registration process.
In 2013, the Essential Competencies were replaced by the Integrated Competencies for Dietetic Education and Practice (ICDEP). The CDBC updated the Essential Competencies to Integrated Competencies in the current CSAP thanks to a generous grant from the BC Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training.
The CSAP is available to internationally-educated dietitians, dietitians who graduated from a non-accredited program in the USA, former CDBC registrants returning to practice after three years, and former dietitians who are registering with the CDBC for the first time. It has been approved by the CDBC Registration Committee and Board of Directors as the College’s current process for assessing the knowledge and skills of these applicants. This evaluation process allows applicants to compare their combined dietetic education, practical training and work experience to recognized standards of current Canadian dietetic practice. It also enables the CDBC to verify competence in all areas of dietetic practice and determine self-directed learning needs to bridge any gaps in knowledge and skills necessary to meet the CDBC registration requirements.

The CSV case studies test competence relative to the Integrated Competencies for Dietetic Education and Practice (ICDEP). The ICDEP represent entry level practice performance expectations. The CSV results are verified by the CDBC through a rigorous process that is based on principles of fairness, consistency and transparency. 从2004年4月1日起，只有在CDBC注册过的个人才可以使用“营养师”头衔，才可以从事营养师条例中规定的限制性执业活动。只有学院注册委员会通过了注册申请后，才能使用注册营养师头衔，自称注册营养师，并从事执业活动。

符合以下条件的申请人可以申请正式注册：

The College of Dietitians of BC (CDBC) regulates dietetic practice in BC under legislation found in the Health Professions Act, the Dietitians Regulation, and the College bylaws. The primary duty of the College is to protect the public by ensuring that dietitians meet requirements necessary for safe and competent dietetic practice.
Since April 1, 2004, only individuals registered with the CDBC may use the title “dietitian” and practice the Restricted Activities stated in the Dietitians Regulation and the bylaws. You may not practice as a dietitian, use the title “dietitian” or call yourself a Registered Dietitian until your application for registration is approved by the College’s Registration Committee.
Please review sections 44 to 47 of the College bylaws in order to determine your eligibility for the various classes of registration. The bylaws are available on the website under the Legislation tab.
Full Registration is available to applicants who:
- have completed an academic education program approved by the CDBC Board and a Canadian program of practical training that was accredited at the time of graduation, or have had their knowledge, skills and abilities assessed for substantial equivalence to Canadian dietetic education and practical training; and
- have successfully completed the examinations approved by the CDBC Board (the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination and CDBC’s Jurisprudence Examination for Dietitians), including any equivalency upgrading programs required by the Registration Committee; and
- meet all other registration requirements.
Temporary Registration is available to applicants for a period of up to one year (renewable once) who have not yet passed the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination (CDRE) or the Jurisprudence Examination for Dietitians (JED) but, in the opinion of the Registration Committee, may practice as a Temporary Registrant without risk to the public.
Note: terms and conditions for practice may be set by the Registration Committee.
Applicants who graduated from a dietetic program that is not approved by the CDBC Board must have their education credentials and dietetic education assessed to determine substantial equivalence to Canadian dietetic education and their eligibility to register with the CDBC.
In 2011, the Registration Committee and Board approved the Competence Self-Assessment Process (CSAP) as the College’s process for assessing substantial equivalence. The CSAP was updated in 2014 to reflect the national Integrated Competencies for Dietetic Education and Practice (ICDEP). The CSAP online process enables applicants to self-assess their dietetic knowledge, skills and abilities relative to Canadian dietetic competencies (the ICDEPs) and determine if there are any gaps in dietetic education or practice. The process allows applicants to self-determine and individualize academic upgrading activities that may be necessary to bridge competence gaps and to prepare for practical training upgrading, Temporary Registration, writing the CDRE。

The pre-assessment process is required to document your eligibility to register:
1. A comprehensive/specialized credential assessment of your academic degree(s) is required to verify your academic degree authenticity and comparability to Canadian post-secondary education. The CDBC must receive the report directly from the assessment agency. You may contact any of the following agencies to obtain this report:
- International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES): www.bcit.ca/ices
- International Qualification Assessment Service (IQAS): Jobs, Economy and Trade | Alberta.ca
- World Education Services (WES): www.wes.org
In order to be eligible for registration assessment, the credential report must state that your education is comparable to four years post-secondary education with a focus in dietetics.
2. Once you meet the requirement in step 1, complete the “Application for Assessment of Academic Education and Practical Training” and forward it to the College with a current resumé.
An assessment is required to determine if the content of your academic education and practical training/experience is comparable to accredited Canadian dietetic education and training. The documents required for this assessment are sent to the CDBC and the cost of the assessment is $400. Payment for the assessment is only processed once all the required documentation is on file.

- Official program syllabus and course descriptions for all programs/ courses that contributed to your degree(s), including the number of weeks and hours of study. These documents must be sent directly from the education institution to the College. If these documents are not provided in English, they must be translated by a certified translator. - Letter of verification of Internship Completion signed by the Dietetic program/ Internship program Director/ Supervisor. The letter must be sent directly from the education institution to the College and include:
- Total length of time of the practical experience
- Types of rotations/areas of practice (e.g. Clinical, Community, Administrative)
- Length of time in each area of practice
- Types of experience and skills developed in each area of practice (e.g. nutrition care planning, individual or group counseling, etc.)
- Type of clients
- Level of competence achieved (i.e. observing, providing dietetic services, supervising)
- Methods of evaluation/assessment
- Position, credential or qualifications of the person(s) supervising each rotation
- A current résumé detailing the variety of employment positions held with emphasis on dietetic experiences and responsibilities. If applicable, include continuing education initiatives completed in the last 3 years in the context of your work as a dietitian.
- A non-refundable cheque for Cdn $400.00 payable to the College of Dietitians of BC.

After completing the pre-assessment of academic education, you will receive information to sign into the CDBC Competence Self-Assessment questionnaire (CSA) online software. Please complete the CSA questionnaire. Your responses will be emailed automatically to the CDBC.
After completing the CSA, you will receive information to sign into the CDBC Competence Selfverification (CSV) case studies. Please complete the first case study and click “Next” when you are ready, to access the next case study. Your answers will be emailed automatically to the CDBC.

4. Once the CSA and CSV are complete, please contact the CDBC to schedule a meeting date with the Practice Advisor, who coordinates registration. If your CSA and CSV results indicate the need for academic and practical training upgrading, you will need to develop a Self-directed Learning (SDL) plan. A template is available at the CDBC website.
During your meeting with the Practice Advisor, your CSA and CSV results will be discussed as well as available education resources and how they can be applied to your SDL plan. The goal of the SDL is to help you bridge gaps in knowledge, skills and abilities required of Canadian dietitians. Your SDL may require course work and practical training upgrading.

5. Your CSAP results and SDL plan will be reviewed by the Registration Committee.
6. Once your SDL is complete, you may choose to test your new knowledge and skills by completing a new set of CSV case studies. (Note: Completing your academic upgrading may take several months or longer; the availability of practical training upgrading positions is currently limited.)
7. Once you complete your academic and practical training upgrading, the Registration Committee will confirm your completion and eligibility for temporary registration.
8. You may apply for Temporary Registration with the CDBC and you may begin working as a “Temporary Registered Dietitian” or “RD(t)”. The “Application for Registration” form and a summary of fees are available on the CDBC website at http://www.collegeofdietitiansbc.org/applicants.
Temporary Registration is available to applicants for a period of up to one year (renewable once). It applies to applicants who have not yet passed the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination (CDRE) or the Jurisprudence Examination for Dietitians (JED) but, in the opinion of the Registration Committee, may practice as a Temporary Registrant without risk to the public.

The CDRE is offered in May and November each year. If you fail your second attempt writing the CDRE, the Registration Committee will review your complete file including CSAP information and CDRE results to determine further academic and/or practical training upgrading requirements.You will be notified of these requirements and will have 3 years to complete upgrading.
