Applicants to the Self-Employed Farmer stream must meet the following criteria. Meeting this criteria does not guarantee a nomination or permanent residence.

Farm management skills - AINP Self-Employed Farmer Stream - flyabroad

Applicants must prove that they have farm management skills.

Proof of this may include, but is not limited to:

  • financial documentation of an existing farm business
  • documentation of education, training and work experience
  • a proposed business plan for the farming enterprise you are considering in Alberta
  • proof that a Canadian financial institution is willing to finance your proposed farming business

Sufficient financial resources - AINP Self-Employed Farmer Stream - flyabroad

Applicants must be able to invest a minimum of CDN $500,000 of equity in a primary production farming business in Alberta.

Documents must be provided that show a minimum net worth of CDN $500,000 or confirmation of the ability to access to a similar amount of funds from other sources.

Applicants may be required to show the ability to invest more than the minimum.

Applicants must document their investment plans in a proposed business plan.

Applications representing the best opportunity for growth relevant to Alberta’s agri-food targets will be given priority.

The following individuals are not eligible under the AINP Self-Employed Farmer Stream:

  • refugee claimants, or individuals involved in a federal appeal or removal process. It is not the mandate of the AINP to intervene in the federal refugee claim, appeal or removal process.
  • live-in caregivers currently living in Canada
  • temporary foreign workers working and residing in a province other than Alberta
  • international students studying in Canada, including students doing co-op work placements or internships as part of their study program

The availability of AINP streams and categories is dependent upon application volumes and labour market needs. The AINP reserves the right to close application intake for any AINP stream or category at any time, without prior notice. Further, the AINP may decline to consider applications to closed or suspended streams or categories, regardless of when the applications were submitted. The criteria for the AINP are routinely evaluated and may be subject to change at any time and without notice. Changes to the AINP, including notice of suspension or closure of its streams and categories and criteria changes, are available at alberta.ca/AINP.

The AINP is not obligated to assess/process any applications submitted. Applications to the AINP are treated as an expression of interest, and as such, will be processed according to quality of the application (completeness, eligibility), labour market information, occupational supply and demand forecasting, AINP application volumes, and / or any other factors at the AINP’s discretion. By submitting an application to the AINP you acknowledge and agree that your application may not be processed in the order received, or at all. Further, the decision to assess / process any particular application, and the outcome of any such assessment / processing, is at the AINP’s sole discretion.

Program criteria are eligibility minimums, and meeting program criteria does not guarantee that a candidate’s application will be assessed, processed, or granted. The AINP may choose to assess applications with the most current criteria irrespective of the date of submission of an application.

Candidates must have a strong likelihood of becoming economically established in Alberta and the AINP reserves the right to decline applications if the AINP is of the opinion that the candidate may not economically establish in Alberta.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry will assess the application. As part of this assessment, you must attend an in-person interview with representatives of the Alberta Government to determine your eligibility under the AINP.

To check whether the Alberta Agriculture and Forestry received your application you must send your application by registered mail or courier and track its delivery.

If Alberta Agriculture and Forestry is satisfied with your application, they will forward your application to the AINP for assessment.

You will receive an email from the AINP confirming that your file has been received. This will include your AINP file number.

If you used an immigration representative to submit your application, your file number will be emailed to you and a copy will be sent to your representative.

Submit information that is requested by an Alberta government officer in the format requested by the officer. The only other information you should submit is:

  • documents that show changes to your address, email and telephone number
  • documents that show changes to your family situation
  • documents that show changes to your financial situation

Use these forms to notify the AINP of updates to your contact information or family situation.

You must provide your AINP file number to submit additional information or documents. This file number is included in your confirmation email.

The AINP does not provide confirmation when it receives additional information.
