What’s it like to be an Aquaculture Farmer?

Aquaculture farmers direct, coordinate and perform farming operations to breed
and raise fish and other aquatic stock such as oysters, crayfish, marron or
prawns.

They usually work outdoors, either on or in the water, and at shore-based
facilities. Fish farms are generally located in sheltered waters. Most
aquaculture farmers are expected to work overtime, particularly in the
harvesting months. Some farming operations may require a diving qualification
and/or a licence to operate a barge.

Aquaculture farmers may perform the following tasks:

  • plan and manage the operation of hatcheries

  • check and maintain water quality to maintain health standards and optimal growing conditions
  • identify and control toxins and diseases
  • check stock growth rates to determine when to harvest
  • direct and oversee the harvesting, grading and packaging of fish and other aquatic stock
  • organise the sale, purchase and transportation of fish and aquatic stock
  • maintain and study records of farming activities, keep an eye on market activity and plan production accordingly
  • manage business capital, including budgeting, taxation, debt and loan management
  • manage quality and production to meet customers’ needs and identify new business opportunities
  • manage the marketing of the farm’s produce and maintain business contacts
  • select, train and supervise staff and contractors.
