Changes to main benefit rates from 1 July

22 June 2021.

On 1 July 2021, main benefit rates will increase by $20 (after tax), per adult, per week as part of the 2021 Budget. This will happen automatically - you don’t need to do anything. Check out the new rates here:

Benefit and payment rates from 1 July 2021

Your first July payment

If you’re paid weekly, you’ll get a part payment at the new rate for the week starting Monday 5 July, and a full payment in the week starting Monday 12 July.

If you get paid fortnightly, you’ll get a part payment at the new rate on Tuesday 6 July, and a full payment on Tuesday 20th July.

The increase won’t affect your Winter Energy Payment, if you get one.

Getting Temporary Additional Support or Accommodation Supplement

When main benefit rates increase on 1 July, we’ll review your supplementary payments.

In some cases, your Temporary Additional Support or Accommodation Supplement will go down, however, most people will see an overall increase in the amount they get each week.

Find out how other payments may change if your main benefit goes up.

The exact amount you get will depend on your situation and costs. You’ll be able to check your payments in MyMSD closer to 1 July.

Unintentionally financially worse-off

If you’re unintentionally worse-off because of the 1 July benefit increase, don’t worry, we’ll grant you a top-up payment for up to 12 months or until your circumstances change. If you qualify for this top-up, we’ll write to you about this.

NZ Super or Veteran’s Pension won’t increase

NZ Super and Veteran’s Pension rates are not increasing on 1 July – they will stay the same.

You can find the current payment rates here.

In general, NZ Super and Veteran’s Pension rates will still be higher than comparable benefit rates, even after the increases on 1 July.

NZ Super and Veteran’s Pension will continue to increase each April, as part of the usual Annual General Adjustment.
