What’s it like to be a Singer?

A singer sings songs to entertain live audiences, or for broadcast or
recording.

Singers must be prepared to spend long periods in practice and rehearsal. They
often work irregular hours, with many performances taking place in the evening
and on weekends. Some work in areas unrelated to music to support themselves
financially.

How much can I expect to earn?

Earnings data based on the Employee Earnings, Benefits and Trade Union
Membership survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics is either unavailable
or unpublishable (typically for privacy reasons).

Personal requirements

  • self-confidence, motivation, dedication and determination
  • stamina to perform at peak level
  • able to concentrate for long periods
  • flair for entertainment
  • good oral communication skills
  • good written communication skills for composing songs.

  • enhance the dramatic effect of a performance with vocal expression, movement and dance

  • compose their own songs and vocal arrangements
  • practice singing and breathing exercises to improve their voices
  • perform with a musical instrument.
