The typical jobs performed by bricklayers include laying of bricks, pre-cut stone, concrete and other types of building blocks in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures.
A bricklayer may also perform work from plans and specifications, and seal foundations with damp-resistant materials. Preoperational tasks may include spreading layers of mortar to serve as a base and binder for bricks, removing excess mortar, and checking vertical and horizontal alignment. Also involved is the use of various tools and brick-cutting machines to cut and shape bricks, construct arches and ornamental brickwork, repair and maintain clay bricks, cement blocks/bricks and related structures, and erect scaffolding (subject to licence requirements in some states).
Bricklayers work outdoors and may have to work at heights or in tunnels and shafts. They usually work in teams. Bricklayers may have some contact with the public.

What’s it like to be a Bricklayer?

Bricklayers lay bricks, concrete blocks and building blocks in mortar to
construct and repair internal and external walls, partitions, arches and other
structures.

Bricklayers mainly work outdoors and may have to work at heights. In
specialised work they may operate in tunnels and shafts. They usually work in
teams. Bricklayers work mainly for builders and may have some contact with the
public.
