Safety inspectors inspect machinery, equipment, working conditions and public
places to ensure they conform with government and industry standards and
regulations for occupational health and safety.

Duties and tasks of a Safety Inspector
Safety inspectors may perform the following tasks:
- examine equipment specifications, and inspect and test machinery, equipment and clothing to ensure it conforms with safety standards and serviceability
- inspect public places and working conditions to ensure compliance with government and industry standards and regulations
- investigate accidents, study their causes and recommend action to be taken
- inspect insured buildings, vehicles and commercial and industrial premises to evaluate conditions and practices affecting insurance risk, as well as to develop safety programs
- check workers to ensure protective devices are being used according to regulations and that dangerous materials are used and stored according to approved procedures
- conduct tests in work areas to detect toxic fumes, explosive mixtures of gas and air, and other work hazards
- ensure fire prevention equipment and other safety supplies, such as first aid kits, stretchers and blankets, conform to standards
- assist in conducting safety meetings and campaigns
- organise training in general safety principles as dictated by regulations
- report unsafe conditions and careless actions of workers.
