What’s it like to be a Technical Writer?

Technical writers research and write information-based material for articles,
manuals, textbooks, handbooks and other multimedia products, usually for
education or corporate purposes. They draw on a substantial knowledge of a
particular subject, such as the natural or social sciences, engineering, law
or other fields. The work involves the development of information and analysis
to select and present information on the specialised subject in a form and at
a level that is suitable for the intended audience.

Technical writers may spend long days sitting at a computer or phoning for
information. Evening or weekend work may be required when deadlines loom.

How much can I expect to earn?

Earnings data based on the Employee Earnings, Benefits and Trade Union
Membership survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics is either unavailable
or unpublishable (typically for privacy reasons).

Personal requirements

  • technical understanding and aptitude
  • able to think and write clearly, often to tight deadlines
  • excellent understanding of English, particularly grammar and spelling
  • able to concentrate over extended periods
  • good organisational skills.

Mainly indoor work

Reading or writing
