ATIA offers membership in the categories of Translator, Court Interpreter, Community Interpreter, and Conference Interpreter.

There are two levels of membership: Associate level and Certified level. To be a Certified Member, you will have to pass several strict examinations, whose number, complexity and modality depend on the membership category.

Conference Interpreter:
To become a certified conference interpreter with ATIA, a person must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
any person who has passed the appropriate interpretation examination set by the CTTIC
is recognized as a simultaneous or consecutive interpreter by the federal government translation bureau in Ottawa
is a member of the L’association internationale des interprètes de conference (AIIC)
is a Certified Member (conference interpreter) in good standing of another association recognized by CTTIC and is eligible for admission to ATIA as a Certified Member
is a member in good standing of another body acceptable to the association

In the case of conference interpretation between languages other than French and English, the applicant must prove that he has worked at least 50 days.
After a person becomes an associate member, the next step is to take and pass the certified level exam, the national exam administered by the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council - (CTTIC).

To be eligible for the Certification Examination for Court Interpreters, the candidate will need to satisfy the following requirements:

Submit an Excel file containing a count of 750 interpretation hours accumulated after admission as associate member or during a 5-year period immediately preceding the admission date. • Coursework completed during studies at Bow Valley College (or any other qualifying institution) is not eligible for inclusion in the interpretation hour log.
• Random verification of interpretation work will be done. Candidates must pass the court interpretation examination within six years of being admitted as an associate member.

A compilation of your hours worked in legal settings since becoming an associate member (including client contact information to allow ATIA to carry out spot-checks). Use the excel spreadsheet forwarded to you after you became an associate member of ATIA. Send the word count form again with this email.

If the member passes the certified examination, he/she can become a certified member (annual dues are currently $240), and will retain membership as long as he/she pays his/her annual dues and adheres to the Code of Ethics of the Association.

Certified Translator
The candidate will first have to pass the Associate-level examination to become an Associate Member. After becoming an Associate Member, the candidate has six years in which to pass the certification process, either by examination or by portfolio review (en dossier). The national exam is administered early each year by the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council - (CTTIC). Portfolio reviews may be initiated at any time during the year. Failure to pass the certification process results in loss of associate status. If the member passes the certification he/she is eligible to become a Certified Member (annual dues are currently $240). Certification is subject to membership in good standing and adherence to the By-laws and the Code of Ethics of the Association.

A degree in translation from a recognized institution plus one year of translation experience.

For candidates without a degree in translation 4 years of experience.
Years of experience correspond to the number of words translated:
Official Languages (EN-FR / FR-EN) 1 year of experience = 100,000 words
Other Languages 1 year of experience = 30,000 words

Certified membership is also available to experienced translators through an “en dossier” or portfolio examination. Samples of a variety of work are submitted to a panel for evaluation, along with letters of reference, etc. With the exception of Quebec, which requires a mentorship process, certification status is portable to other provincial associations.

Associate Court Interpreter

The spring exam is held in March with an information session in January (registration deadline in late December). The fall examination is held in September with a mandatory information session in July (registration deadline in late June).

Candidates review a case study and identify breaches of ATIA’s Code of Ethics and the Rules of Professional Conduct for Court Interpreters.
The pass mark is 70%.
Step 2: Application Review
This Application must be submitted within one year of passing the Code of Ethics Exam.
Print and complete this Court_Interpreters_Admission_-Application_Form.pdf and submit it with the completed Court_Int_Hour_Log_blank.xls.
Candidates who pass both steps are eligible to become associate members of the Association. Annual associate membership dues are currently $160.

Associate Translator
In order to be admitted to ATIA as an Associate Member, a candidate must pass a multi-part exam.
The spring examination is held in March and April, and its mandatory information session is held in early January. The deadline for registration is in late December. The fall examination is held in September and October, and its mandatory information session is held in early July. The deadline for registration is in late June.
The Associate-level exam is administered in two sections:
Section I:
Part A: Code of Ethics
Candidates review a case study and identify breaches of ATIA’s Code of Ethics
Part B: English/French Proficiency
Candidates writing into English must pass an editing test; candidates writing from English must pass a reading comprehension test. French proficiency versions have been administered since 2003. Reading comprehension/editing exams in French are administered only for language combination that do not involve English, e.g. FR-ES, or ES-FR.
The pass mark for Parts A and B is 70%. Both parts of Section 1 must receive a passing mark.
Section II:
Part C: Translation Examination
After achieving a passing mark in Section I, the candidate is admitted to Section II - the translation exam. The translation exam consists of a general text of approximately 250 words. The exam is marked by two Certified Translators in the respective language combination. The pass mark is 70%. Candidates who pass the exam are eligible to become Associate Members of the Association. Annual associate membership dues are currently $160.

C部分：笔译考试
第一节获得通过分后，报考者就可以参加第二节的笔译考试。笔译考试由大约250字的文章组成。考试由对应语言的认证笔译员判分，通过分是70%，通过后可以成为准会员，目前准会员的年费为$160。
