1. Professional Biologist
This category designates individuals who fully meet requirements for academic, experience and good character. A P. Biol. has voting privileges in the ASPB, and may hold office as a Director or Officer. Only a P. Biol. may use the protected title Professional Biologist or the abbreviation P. Biol.

Academic
A P. Biol. must hold a four year undergraduate and/or graduate degree(s) in the biological sciences from a Canadian university, or equivalent. The Registration Committee considers a university degree is equivalent to a biology degree if it includes 25 science courses, of which 15 are in the biological sciences, and where four or more of the biological science courses are at a senior level (i.e., third or fourth-year).
An applicant should arrange for university transcripts and proof of degree to be sent directly from the university to the ASPB office. In most cases, the ASPB may request a candidate with a degree from an institution outside Canada to obtain an evaluation of foreign credentials.

Experience
A P. Biol. must have three or more years of practice in biology earned after graduation (i.e., after academic requirements have been met). Usually it is expected that the experience must have been obtained not more than ten years prior to the application. An applicant with an M.Sc or Ph.D will be given one year’s biology practice credit for each degree.
An applicant should provide the ASPB with a resume which lists dates, location of experience, and details of the applicant’s role in the practice of biology. Please note: this is not a resume to apply for a job, but a document outlining your experience in the practice of biology. This information must be clearly stated on the resume in great detail (for example, do not say you were “involved in a benthic invertebrate survey” but outline your role in the survey).
Please do not submit your work resume that is given to clients! They are not in the proper format for the committee to review. Please read through the FAQ page for further details.
The practice of biology is defined as:
Inventorying, surveying, sampling, interpreting, reporting, evaluating and advising on activities related to biological sciences.
Preparing, administering and implementing plans or programs for managing biological resources,
Conducting research activities related to biological sciences, and
Teaching biological sciences at a university, college or technical institute.

Good Character and Reputation
An applicant should provide the names of three referees who are knowledgeable about the applicant’s professional experience as a biologist. At least one referee should be a P. Biol. If a P. Biol. is not available who is familiar with the applicant’s conduct, a professional from another recognized professional organization will be acceptable. Preferred referees include the applicant’s current employer, previous employer or supervisor. Only two letters of reference will be accepted from a current employer.
All P. Biol. applicants must complete an ethics course as prescribed by the Society before becoming a member in good standing. Professional Biologists must then maintain continuing competency requirements on a yearly basis.

An applicant for membership as a BIT in the ASPB must hold a four year undergraduate and/or graduate degree(s) in the biological sciences from a Canadian university, or equivalent. The Registration Committee considers a university degree is equivalent to a biology degree if it includes 25 science courses, of which 15 are in the biological sciences, and where four or more of the biological science courses at a senior level (i.e., third or fourth-year).
An applicant should arrange for university transcripts and proof of degree to be sent directly from the university to the ASPB office. In most cases, the ASPB may request a candidate with a degree from an institution outside Canada to obtain an evaluation of foreign credentials.
Once a BIT has three years of experience, they may apply to become a Professional Biologist.

3. Registered Biologist
This new membership category designates individuals with a degree from a recognized university, but who are one to three biology courses short of the requirements for Professional Biologist. Registered Biologists will be non-regulated.

Academic

Experience and Good Character and Reputation

A RBIT must hold an undergraduate and/or graduate degree(s). The Registration Committee considers a university degree is equivalent to a biology degree if it includes 25 science courses, of which a minimum of 12 are in the biological sciences, and where four or more of the biological science courses are at a senior level (i.e., third or fourth-year).
An applicant should arrange for university transcripts and proof of degree to be sent directly from the university to the ASPB office. In some cases, the ASPB may request a candidate with a degree from an institution outside Canada to obtain an evaluation of foreign credentials.
Once a RBIT has three years of experience, they may apply to become a Registered Biologist. A RBIT may also take additional courses and apply directly as a Professional Biologist once they have met the experience requirements.

6. Biological Technologist in Training

Currently, the following programs have been accepted:
- NAIT: (Biological Sciences) Renewable Resources, and Lab and Research
- Lethbridge Community College: Fish and Wildlife
- Lakeland College at Vermillion: (Environmental Sciences Diploma) Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation Major and Conservation and Restoration Ecology (CARE)
The ASPB will accredit further programs as the technologist stream is developed.

7. Student Biologist
This category provides an opportunity for any student enrolled in a full-time program of biology at a Canadian university or an ASPB approved college program to be members of the ASPB. Individuals applying for membership as a Student Biologist must be enrolled in a full-time program of biology to the ASPB and pay yearly dues.
The ASPB’s Registration Committee considers that any Canadian university degree in a biology program, which includes botany, zoology, environmental biology and microbiology, is adequate to meet the academic requirements of a BIT or P. Biol. Other degrees, although they are not named “biology”, may include enough biological content to be accepted.
The ASPB has compiled a document to help those who are interested in becoming members of the ASPB select courses that will provide them with the necessary academic qualifications. This is not an exhaustive list of courses but provided as guidance to applicants to see what courses the ASPB considers biology.

八、暂时取消身份的生物学家 飞出国###

8. Temporary Withdrawn Biologist
This category allows P. Biol.s to temporarily withdraw from the association for a period of up to two years upon written request to the Registrar. Temporary Withdrawn Biologists may not use the title of Professional Biologist or P. Biol. Many members apply for this status while on parental leave or out of the work force.
Within a period of two years from the notification, any Temporary Withdrawn Biologist in good standing will be reinstated as a P. Biol. or Associated Biologist upon written request to the Registrar and payment of applicable fees. A Temporary Withdrawn Biologist who does not apply for re-instatement within the two-year period will automatically reinstated as a Professional Biologist and required to pay applicable fees.
九、准生物学家 飞出国###

9. Associated Biologist
A P. Biol. or Temporarily Withdrawn Biologist who is no longer practicing biology in the province of Alberta may become an Associated Biologist upon written request to the Registrar and with payment of applicable fees. Retired P. Biol., or R. Biol. whose careers have taken them in other directions fit in this category. An associated member may not longer use the Professional Biologist title, and if they wish to return to professional status, must reapply to the Society.

College of Applied Biology Applicants
On April 1, 2009, the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) came into effect. The TILMA states that any worker certified for an occupation by a regulatory authority of British Columbia or Alberta shall be recognized as qualified to practice that occupation by the other province. In 2010, the Governments of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan signed the New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA) to replace TILMA.
Under the NWPTA, the ASPB is required to recognize any worker who is currently a Registered Professional Biologist (R.P. Bio.) in good standing with the British Columbia College of Applied Biology (BC-CAB) as eligible for registration as a Professional Biologist in Alberta.
A R.P.Bio from British Columbia who wishes to become a P. Biol. in Alberta is required to complete an ASPB membership application form, be confirmed as an R.P.Bio in good standing by the ASPB Registrar, and pay the ASPB membership fee. All regulated members must also complete an ethics course as prescribed by the Association. Biologist in Training members may also enter ASPB through TILMA, however, they must apply for the equivalent category.
For biologists in Saskatchewan where the practice is not regulated, they must meet the requirements of ASPB and apply as a new applicant.

会员费更新流程

Membership Fee Renewal Process
Your membership is valid until December 31 each year. You must renew in order to be considered a member in good standing.
Late fees of $25 are added February 28. If you do not pay by April 30, the ASPB will remove your name from the register of members, and you are no longer a member of ASPB. You will be required to reapply to ASPB under current requirements if you wish to be a member once again.

##10. Internationally Trained Applicants ##
If your credentials come from outside of Canada, you must get an IQAS assessment completed. This process is done so ASPB can accurately assess academics. it is strongly recommended that you get a specialized assessment, especially if your program was not focused on biology, or if you completed a three year program.
