Software Engineering

Consider the evolution of the Internet, the growth of mobile computing, the enormous variety of software everyone interacts with every day.

The need for engineers to create and maintain this digital world increases year by year. Software engineers design and modify complex software systems to support the society we live in. This includes the business we conduct, the transport we take and the games we play. In safety critical areas such as air travel, nuclear power plants control, medical treatment, fire detection systems, and roller coaster rides the cost of failure can be lives at risk. Other software is information-critical the banking we conduct, medical records we update.

SE is about creating high-quality software in a systematic, controlled, and efficient manner. It is an approach to designing software to maximise quality and reliability by treating it as a formal engineering process. In a software engineering approach to building software there is important emphasis on analysis and design, specification and evaluation of software.

Engineers who specialise in software can work for industries as varied as entertainment (think games development), transport (eg, fly-by-wire, autopilots, driverless trains, smart ticketing, online travel booking and check- in), resources (eg, mining software and aerial mapping/terrain modelling), defence (eg, terror attack simulations and submarine navigation), medicine (eg, diagnosis software, implant development) and telecommunications, to name just a few. Emerging opportunities for software engineering include in cyber security which is increasingly important for industry and government including utilities and other critical infrastructure, smart infrastructure and homes and in security monitoring. The ability to make more efficient use of energy resources and create sustainable solutions increasingly depends on software engineers. Automation, control and instrumentation in all forms of infrastructure, manufacturing, buildings, utilities and transport will place an increasing demand on software engineers. A scan of job databases will reveal the potential careers on offer.

Good vision for detail

These jobs require you to be able to see clearly to examine items close-up. It
covers jobs where poor vision e.g. tunnel vision, could make the work place
unsafe or the job difficult to undertake, e.g. draftsperson working with
detailed drawings; checkout operator reading dockets; work requiring good
hand-eye co-ordination for working with precision or semi-precision tools.

Mainly indoor work

Workers performing these jobs would usually be expected to spend more than
three-quarters of their day indoors, in an office, factory or other enclosed
area protected from the weather.

Reading or writing

These jobs require moderate or better reading and writing skills. Workers may
be expected to prepare, understand or act on written materials, such as
letters or reports. People may wish to avoid these jobs if their reading or
writing English skills are limited to a small range of words or phrases and
symbols. Jobs remaining may still require very basic reading or writing
skills.

This occupation offers jobs at the following skill levels:

Professional Jobs

Jobs in this group usually require completion of a recognised Bachelor Degree,
or extensive relevant experience. Some jobs also require post-graduate study,
such as a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master Degree.

Study requirements

At school, you can study these subject(s) to get a good foundation for this
occupation:

Computing Studies

School subjects that include some aspect of COMPUTING STUDIES provide a useful
background to these jobs. In some cases a computer studies-related subject is
a pre-requisite for entry to courses that provide the training for the job.

Duties and tasks of a Systems Designer (Information Technology)

Systems designers (IT) may perform the following tasks:

  • work with analysts on the feasibility of a conceptual design by taking technical specifications prepared by the analyst and designing system components to meet the set requirements
  • draw up detailed design documentation including charts and diagrams that indicate the various components involved
  • prepare instructions for programmer implementation
  • talk with other team members (analysts and programmers) to ensure functionality according to systems specifications, and develop solutions as problems or issues arise
  • design monitoring and performance measurement processes.

Specialisations

Operations Systems Designer

An operations systems designer is involved in the design and implementation of
operational systems, with the objective of optimising systems performance. The
focus is on operational systems such as mainframes, desktop and mid-range
solutions.

Software Designer

A software designer works in the area of design and modification of the
operating environment software that links computer software and hardware. The
role is sometimes also described as Software Engineer, implying some knowledge
of the associated hardware on which the software runs.

Network Designer

A network designer is generally involved in design functions in contexts that
include in-house networks or larger, distributed mainframe systems. Design
work in this context can be very complex, with large numbers of protocols,
platforms and software solutions that need to communicate with each other.

Applications System Designer

An applications system designer undertakes design tasks for business computer
systems such as payroll or stock control.

Systems Architect

A systems architect examines the hardware requirements that support systems
implementation across personal computers, mainframes or networks.

Database Design Specialist

A database design specialist plays an important role in devising databases to
