Human resource managers plan, administer and review activities concerned with
staff selection, training and development, conditions of employment and other
staffing issues within an organisation.

Human resource managers work in an office environment for a wide range of
organisations. They may be required to visit other worksites to inspect
operations and manage staff.

Duties and tasks of a Human Resource Manager

Human resource managers may perform the following tasks:

  • direct the formulation of human resource management strategies, policies and plans
  • advise and assist managers with recruiting, training and development programs
  • develop and implement performance management systems to plan, appraise and improve individual and team performance
  • represent the organisation in negotiations with unions and employees to determine remuneration and other conditions of employment
  • oversee the maintenance of personnel records and various human resources information systems
  • coordinate occupational health and safety programs and practices, develop equal opportunity programs, and ensure compliance with related legislation
  • oversee the application of redundancy and other employee retrenchment policies
  • monitor employment costs and productivity levels
  • train and advise other managers in personnel and industrial relations matters.
